Inspiration
We are queer people that would love to travel the world and possibly move to a different country, but we, alongside other queer people, fear whether or not we will be accepted in these different countries. With anti-queer legislation becoming increasingly prevalent, we hope to provide a resource that queer people around the world can use!
What it does
SafeSpace provides country specific data on LGBTQ+ equality and provides access to LGBTQ+ mental health services and LGBTQ+ safe queer spaces maps. It also features a triple-click quick escape button for user safety,
How we built it
Using Java and the Swing library, we developed a platform using JButtons, JLabels. and JComboBoxes to curate an interface that can take user input to display information about LGBTQ+ equality. We broke down a csv file of LGBTQ+ data using FileReader and Scanner as well.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into the challenge of all our features being able to run simultaneously.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a platform that can provide critical information of safety for queer people.
What we learned
We learned about the Java Swing Library and how to read csv files in Java.
What's next for SafeSpace
Making a more user-friendly and appealing interface, imbedding the Everywhere is Queer map into the platform instead of linking it.
