Inspiration

I was inspired to create this project because I personally experienced challenges with bullying and know how hard it can be to speak up. Many students, like me, struggle to get help due to fear or a lack of trust in the system. This inspired me to create a solution that helps students safely report concerns and allows the school to respond effectively, making the school community safer.

What it does

SafeSpace allows students to report bullying or safety concerns anonymously without sharing their name. Teachers receive reports directly and can review them quickly. The app also includes student accounts, classroom codes for organization, and an analytics section that helps teachers track reports and identify patterns. Its goal is to make reporting safer, faster, and more accessible for students.

How I built it

I identified bullying as a problem in my school community and researched why many students do not report it. After exploring existing reporting systems, I designed and built SafeSpace with anonymous reporting, student and teacher accounts, classroom codes, analytics, and privacy features. When I lost access to my first prototype, I rebuilt the entire app on a new platform.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges was losing access to my original prototype when my free plan expired, forcing me to rebuild the app from scratch. Later, during my mentor presentation, the login system failed because the school Wi-Fi blocked authentication, teaching me to adapt and solve problems under pressure.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

I successfully built a working prototype that included all of the features I originally planned. I am also proud that teachers responded positively to the idea, and that parts of SafeSpace may be used to improve student reporting at my school.

What I learned

This project taught me that meaningful service requires research, planning, and resilience. I also learned that privacy and trust are essential when designing solutions for sensitive issues, and that making an impact does not always require full implementation.

What's next for SafeSpace

The next step is to work with the school's IT department to make the app compatible with the school network. I also hope to collect student feedback, test the app in different environments, and continue improving SafeSpace based on real user needs.
