Inspiration

Mental health crises don't wait for business hours or therapy appointments. We were inspired by the growing mental health crisis among young adults who face immediate challenges but encounter critical barriers: $100-200 therapy sessions they can't afford, overwhelmed crisis hotlines with long wait times, limited after-hours resources, and stigma that prevents them from seeking help. We envisioned SafeSpace as a solution that meets people where they are—in crisis, at 3 AM, without judgment, and without cost.

What it does

SafeSpace is an open-source platform providing immediate, free, 24/7 mental health support that bridges the gap between crisis and professional therapy. The platform offers:

  • AI Crisis Support: An empathetic chatbot trained to provide immediate responses and support, available instantly any time of day
  • Peer Support Network: Anonymous matching with trained peer volunteers for genuine human connection when users need it most
  • Resource Directory: Curated local mental health services, crisis hotlines, and free therapy options tailored to each user's location
  • Mood Tracking: Tools to help users identify patterns in their mental health and export data for future therapist appointments

SafeSpace can serve unlimited users simultaneously, with support available in under 60 seconds, at zero cost per user, removing the critical barriers that prevent young adults from accessing help.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Removing Barriers: Creating a truly free, stigma-free solution that serves unlimited users simultaneously
  • Instant Access: Reducing time to support from days/weeks to under 60 seconds
  • Community-Driven: Building an open-source platform that can be deployed by communities worldwide
  • Holistic Approach: Combining AI, human connection, and professional resources rather than relying on just one solution
  • Scalable Impact: Designing infrastructure that grows with demand without increasing per-user costs

What we learned

  • Mental health support isn't one-size-fits-all—users need multiple pathways (AI, peer support, professional resources)
  • Technology can bridge gaps in the mental health system, but must be designed with extreme care and ethical considerations
  • Anonymity and accessibility are crucial for reaching users who might never seek traditional help
  • Open-source solutions can democratize mental health support for underserved communities
  • The importance of positioning our platform as a bridge to professional care, not a replacement

What's next for SafeSpace
