Inspiration

Scrolling through r/AgingParents, we kept seeing the same story a parent falls at home, lies there for hours, and the house was never assessed for safety. 60% of senior falls happen at home and half are preventable. Professional OT assessments cost $400 and take weeks. We wanted to make that instant and free.

What it does

SafeSpace has two features. A room scanner where you upload a photo and AI draws bounding boxes directly onto hazards in the image with fix recommendations and costs. And a home design tool where you enter your mobility conditions and get a full room by room accessible home blueprint tailored to your needs.

How we built it

HTML/CSS/JS frontend. The scan feature uses Gemini to detect hazards and return bounding box coordinates, rendered onto the photo using HTML5 Canvas.

Challenges we ran into

Getting reliable bounding box coordinates from a vision model was the hardest part we engineered structured prompts returning normalized coordinates and built a canvas renderer that works at any screen size.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The live bounding box annotation on real room photos it makes the AI output feel tangible in a way a text list never could. The full pipeline runs in under 30 seconds with no account or installation required.

What we learned

The real barrier to fall prevention is friction, not technology. That insight drove every design decision, ruthlessly removing steps between a family and a safer home. We also learned a lot about hazard frameworks and how to encode clinical knowledge into AI prompts.

What's next for SafeSpace

A multi room summary dashboard, better pixel accurate detection, and a B2B partnership model with occupational therapy clinics and home insurers, where preventing even one $35,000 fall hospitalization more than justifies the cost.
