Inspiration

I first got this idea when I was surfing the internet and I came across multiple suspicious sites that I unknowingly clicked. There are times when I wish there was something (or someone) that could tell me whether a site could be trusted or not, and that was when I was inspired to create this browser extension.

What it does

Safesite is a browser extension that puts a label of whether a website is "SAFE", "UNSAFE", or "NO DATA" beside the links that appear when you enter a search. A link labelled "SAFE" is determined by the amount of user reviews it has on a different platform (a website which collects and stores all the data of the reviews).

How we built it

I built it in VS Code using mainly JSON, HTML, Js and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

The most recurring challenge we ran into when creating this project is a lack of resources. This was originally supposed to be a Chrome extension, not a Firefox extension, however the requirement to become a Chrome developer came with a fee. Other than that, I also found multiple moments where I felt like I'd had a brick wall when it came to programming, where I'd also wish that more solutions to these specific problems could be found easily.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

My main accomplishment that I'm proud of is the fact that this tool is able to help people stay away from potentially harmful websites, and it does it in a way that integrates real human reviews and connection.

What we learned

What's next for SafeSite

It definitely does not end here; I plan to upload SafeSite as a usable extension onto FireFox once it goes through the approval and reviewing process.
