One of our team members recently turned 21. In honor of her birthday, and with the objective of promoting the health and wellness of our friend group, we decided to create this application. A night of going out and drinking with friends may be fun, but it comes with many risks. With this application, we hope to offer a tool to help people stay safe and track their consumption levels.
What it does
Our app has several different features. We connect to applications, and send and update text to selected contacts at a given time interval. This is to help notify others of your location and status. Our app also keeps track of blood alcohol content using weight, height, gender, and number of beverages consumed. It provides a simple to use interface for logging drinks, as well as tracking weekly rates.
How I built it
We used Android studio, and wrote the application entirely with Java and XML. We used the google cloud platform in order to use authentication and other features within our application.
Challenges I ran into
None of our teammembers had much experience with Android studio (or any mobile development) before the hackathon. We struggled for several hours to learn and successfully implement our code, and after much effort we came away with an application we are proud of, and new knowledge.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud of creating a fully fleshed out and functional android application. We learned a lot throughout the hackathon, and were able to build a polished final product.
What I learned
We learned a lot about Android app development, XML, and Java.
What's next for SafeSip
We would love to add additional features to SafeSip like sharing location, blocking contacts, and advanced options to create a customized user experience.
