Inspiration

CIP (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain) patients are at high risk of accidental injuries because they cannot feel pain. We wanted to create a tool that empowers them and their caregivers to stay safe, by detecting risky behaviours and environmental hazards in real time... using only a webcam and AI.

What it does

SafeSight AI Hazard Detector continuously monitors the user’s environment and behaviours, alerting them to potentially harmful repetitive actions or hazardous objects. It focuses on: --> Repetitive rubbing, scratching, or touching of sensitive areas --> Dangerous environmental factors (sharp edges, moving objects) --> Unsafe object interactions (gripping too tightly, pressing against surfaces or own body)

How we built it

--> For front-end development, we utilized Google AI Studio, employing Gemini 3 Pro's advanced front-end development. We then downloaded its code, added the files to our shared GitHub Repository, and committed different versions. We iterated through multiple prototypes and features to find a combination that works best for our intended application.

Challenges we ran into

We were unable to make changes to our project through Google AI Studio because we ran out of credit, which is why we had to manually code a lot of the features. We constantly ran into API key errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although it was daunting at first, we eventually succeeded in debugging a major bug with our API. Moreover, we're most proud that we also have a working model of SafeSight with visual and audio output that can be implemented on an elementary/testing basis. Our application also contains a streamlined, clean home page including extra information about CIP and our solution.

What we learned

--> Communication is key, both in software and among teammates --> We learned how to use API keys --> We learned how to engineer prompts and context for AI.

What's next for SafeSight AI Hazard Detection for CIP Patients

--> Thermal detection technology for heat-related warnings --> Multiple external cameras (not only webcam) --> Expansion and customization for different disorders
