Inspiration
We were inspired by the growing need for real-time information during natural disasters, especially hurricanes that occured in Florida. Our goal was to create a tool that helps people find safe evacuation routes and nearby shelters quickly and easily avoiding the hapazard routes.
What it does
SafeScape integrates Google Maps and live weather data to guide users to the nearest shelters during emergencies. It provides real-time updates on safe routes, shelter availability, and lets users report hazards like road blockages.
How we built it
We used:
- React.js, HTML, CSS, Javascript for the frontend.
- Node.js for the backend, managing real-time shelter and weather data.
- APIs: Google Maps for navigation, National Weather Service API for weather tracking
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating multiple APIs seamlessly.
- Handling large amounts of real-time data efficiently.
- Designing an easy-to-use interface for high-stress situations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully integrating real-time disaster navigation.
- Creating a simple, intuitive user interface.
- Incorporating community-driven hazard reporting.
What we learned
- Mastering API integration and real-time data management.
- The importance of designing for simplicity and ease of use.
- Balancing performance with real-time data processing.
What's next for SafeScape
- Expanding to cover more unforeseen disaster types like landslides and earthquakes.
- Adding offline maps and AI-based route optimization.
- Introducing multilingual support for broader accessibility.
