Inspiration
As women ourselves, one of the biggest potential threats we face include how to prevent sexual assault while walking home safely. This is a fear inducing problem for both the victim as well as victim's parents and guardians and is one of the biggest problems facing women everywhere. Cases relating to sexual assault are not limited to a specific country, location, time or how women in general dress while being outdoors. Sexual Assault is a very prevalent problem in everyday society and needs to be dealt with to improve the condition and environment of women everywhere since it goes heavily unreported. Therefore the scope of this problem inspired us to make our website Safe Routes. link
What it does
This is a program that helps to create protective environments and support victims and survivors to lessen harms. The aim of this program is to provide safety and comfort to women. We provide a map in which anyone can zoom in on a route that one would like to take home and to take a route where the least amount of crime rates are reported. This crime rate data comes from the 2020-2021 release crime dataset from the city of Seattle. We also provide sexual assault resources to give women a line of action of how to prevent sexual assault and how to act after the victim is assaulted. We have also provided a button to call 911 right as you see our website as well as a button to call both 911 and Sexual assault hotline in the sexual assault resources tab to make it easier to call and handle tough situations. Since sexual assault is unreported, we ask victims and users who got affected by sexual assault to report the crime to a website where it will go anonymous and also not be issued in the public record. This encourages victims to report and update our database and provide real time data to prevent future accidents.
How we built it
We incorporated a dataset from the 2020-2021 release crime dataset from the city of Seattle into a heat map which outlines areas in which the size of the circle or marker indicates how much crime rate occurs and therefore makes it clear to the user to avoid said area. We also made a website from scratch and researched all our information heavily to make it credible and informative to users. The stylistic elements of our website our also researched to make it easier to navigate and approach for new and existing users.
Challenges we ran into
Embedding the map into the website was hard as we had to move a lot of elements within our preexisting website. Making the heat map itself from the dataset was a little challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud to make a project that creates an effective applicable format for users to create safer environments for women to walk in an area without having to feel uncomfortable or fearful. We are proud to have made a very user-friendly website that is appealing and easy on the eye and very easy to navigate to support anyone who is in a tough and rough situation. We have provided plenty of resources so that the users feel at ease while reporting incidents.
What we learned
We learned a lot about how many crimes actually occur day to day and in what areas near where we live. We also learnt how much victims are traumatized and therefore this problem takes such a toll on the mental health of numerous women everywhere and is not dealt with to a scale as which is necessary.
What's next for Safe Routes?
We want to continually expand this capability to other areas and keep growing safer communities around the world. We also hope to make this program in an app format supported and funded by local charities to stream line this system and provide users with data to the second and help prevent accidents. We also want to make a functionality that send notifications to users if they are approaching a high crime rate area or an area where a recent crime was located.
Sorry our video is cut off we have given the website and pictures below to show you a clearer view.
