I wanted to tackle something real that teenagers deal with almost every day: the fear of walking alone and not knowing if a street or route is safe. Most map apps only focus on getting you somewhere fast, not safely. That gap inspired me to create an app that gives teens a bit more confidence and peace of mind in their daily movements.
What I Learned
Throughout this project, I learned how to break down a big, emotional problem into simple user flows. I explored how to design for safety, accessibility, and quick decision-making. I also improved my skills in rapid prototyping, testing ideas quickly, and thinking from the user’s emotional perspective.
How I Built It
I started by defining the main user pain points and sketching early concepts. Once I had the core flow, I used Lovable to generate structured wireframes and design directions. After that, I refined the designs in Figma, built the visual system, and created an interactive prototype. My focus was on making the interface calm, intuitive, and easy to use even in stressful moments.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was finding the right balance: creating strong safety features without overwhelming or scaring users. Designing emergency interactions that feel quick, simple, and reassuring required a lot of iteration and careful thinking.
Features
SafeRoute includes a small set of focused features that make walking alone feel safer and more predictable:
Safe Route Navigation :Instead of showing the fastest path, the app highlights safer streets, well-lit areas, and avoids risky zones.
“I Feel Unsafe” Button :A large, always-visible button that opens quick actions like sending an alert, sharing location, or triggering a fake call.
Live Location Sharing: Users can share their real-time location with trusted contacts in one tap.
Trusted Contacts List : A simple way to add parents or friends who can receive alerts instantly.
Community Safety Reports : Users can mark unsafe spots on the map (dark streets, harassment, broken lights), helping others stay alert.
Calm, Teen-Friendly Interface — Gentle colors, large buttons, and minimal text to reduce stress during urgent moments.
