Inspiration

We were inspired by a pressing yet often overlooked problem: the lack of safety-focused navigation tools, especially for women, students, and night shift workers. Current apps prioritize speed over security, neglecting contextual data like crime rates, lighting, and time of day.

What struck us most was that over 70% of women worldwide avoid certain routes after dark. That reality, paired with countless personal stories of unsafe commutes, inspired us to build something more responsible , SafeRoute, an AI-powered navigation system that values safety over speed.

What it does

SafeRoute redefines how we navigate streets by using AI to calculate the safest walking routes, not just the fastest ones. Key features include: 1.Smart Risk Engine: Uses crime data, lighting conditions, foot traffic, weather, and time-of-day to score route safety. 2.Crowdsourced Alerts: Users can report unsafe incidents or suspicious areas in real-time. 3.Lighting Overlay: Visual layer that highlights well-lit vs. dimly lit streets. 4.SOS Mode: Emergency button that shares live location with trusted contacts or local authorities. 5.Live Safety Notifications: Warns users about risky zones ahead with contextual cues.

How we built it

As this is an ideathon, our process focused on ideating a scalable and ethical architecture: 1.Mapped out potential data sources: open crime data, city lighting maps, weather APIs, etc. 2.Designed a multi-layered AI model capable of adapting to live inputs. 3.Structured feature modules: route risk scoring, real-time updates, and user-driven feedback. 4.Explored integration possibilities with AR devices and smart glasses for immersive, heads-up safety cues.

Challenges we ran into

We faced issues with incomplete or inconsistent safety data, such as outdated crime stats or missing lighting information. Balancing safety with route efficiency was tricky—users won’t always opt for much longer paths. Ensuring data privacy and avoiding bias in identifying unsafe areas were also critical concerns.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to propose a solution that focuses on real-world safety using AI. The idea of combining community alerts, live risk scoring, and even AR integration reflects both innovation and impact. SafeRoute empowers users and encourages safer urban movement.

What we learned

We learned that personal safety is deeply contextual and requires AI systems to be empathetic, not just intelligent. Human input, transparency, and responsible data use are essential to building trust and effectiveness in safety-focused technologies.

What's next for SafeRoute: The AI Guardian of Streets

Next, we aim to develop a prototype, begin city-level pilots, and expand features like smart glasses integration for real-time AR safety overlays. SafeRoute could also help cities identify areas needing better lighting or surveillance using crowdsourced insights.
