Inspiration
The inspiration for SafeRide stemmed from the stark reality that while autonomous vehicles dominate tech innovation, 99% of the world’s 1.4 billion vehicles remain traditional, with over 99.9% in developing countries. With 1.3 million annual road deaths due to accidents in blackspots, school zones, and sharp bends, we saw a critical need for affordable safety solutions for existing vehicles, not just futuristic ones.
What it does
SafeRide provides intelligent, offline software that alerts drivers with voice and text notifications when approaching hazard zones like school zones or sharp bends. Powered by GPT-OSS, it enhances safety for traditional vehicles without requiring costly autonomous tech. Future plans include hardware to enforce speed limits in these zones.
How we built it
We developed SafeRide’s offline software using GPT-OSS, leveraging its natural language processing for real-time hazard detection. The system integrates with vehicle GPS to identify blackspots and trigger alerts. We used open-source mapping data and tested on simulated road networks to ensure reliability in diverse conditions.
Challenges we ran into
Data Accuracy: Sourcing reliable, up-to-date hazard zone data was tough, especially for rural areas. Offline Processing: Ensuring GPT-OSS worked offline required optimizing for low computational resources. Scalability: Adapting the system for global use across varied road conditions posed logistical hurdles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created an affordable, offline safety solution accessible to millions. Successfully integrated GPT-OSS for real-time hazard alerts. Laid the groundwork for future hardware that enforces speed limits in hazard zones.
What we learned
We learned the importance of balancing cutting-edge tech with practical accessibility. Optimizing AI for offline use taught us resource-efficient coding. Engaging with global road safety data deepened our understanding of diverse driving conditions.
What's next for SafeRide-Saves-Life
SafeRide aims to develop hardware that actively limits vehicle speed in hazard zones, unlike generic speed limiters. We plan to expand our database of blackspots globally and partner with vehicle manufacturers to integrate SafeRide into existing models, saving more lives.
