Inspiration

Cross-border commerce has a trust problem. Buyers worry about paying before receiving goods or services, while sellers worry about delivering without guaranteed payment. Existing escrow platforms are often expensive, offer limited payment options, and are not built for today's global economy. SafePay was inspired by a simple idea: trust should be built into every transaction, whether it's paid with a bank transfer, mobile money, card, or cryptocurrency.

What it does

SafePay is an intelligent escrow and payment orchestration platform that enables secure transactions between buyers and sellers worldwide. It supports milestone payments, dispute resolution, fiat and cryptocurrency payments, and intelligent routing that selects the most suitable payment provider for every transaction. Developers can also integrate SafePay directly into marketplaces and applications through a unified API.

How we built it

We designed SafePay using Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Hexagonal Architecture to keep the business logic independent of payment providers. The backend is built with Node.js and TypeScript, while the frontend uses React and Next.js. External services such as payments, custody, settlement, compliance, and notifications are connected through provider interfaces, making the platform modular and easy to extend as new partners are added.

Challenges we ran into

Designing financial infrastructure is significantly more complex than building a typical web application. We had to carefully model escrow lifecycles, milestone funding, dispute workflows, payment routing, and settlement while keeping the platform flexible enough to support multiple providers across different countries. Balancing a smooth user experience with compliance and security requirements was one of the biggest architectural challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a strong architectural foundation before writing large amounts of code. SafePay is designed to support both fiat and crypto transactions through a single platform, with intelligent routing, modular provider integrations, comprehensive audit trails, and an API-first approach that allows businesses to embed trusted payments directly into their own products. The project has evolved into an infrastructure that can scale far beyond a traditional escrow service.

What we learned

This project reinforced that financial software is fundamentally about trust. Clean architecture, clear domain boundaries, and thoughtful system design are just as important as writing code. We also learned the importance of planning for future integrations without introducing unnecessary complexity, allowing the platform to evolve while remaining maintainable.

What's next for SafePay

Our next milestones are completing the core platform, integrating payment providers, implementing KYC and compliance workflows, and launching the first public beta. Our long-term vision is to partner with banks, fintech companies, and payment networks to make SafePay the trust layer for global commerce, enabling anyone to buy and sell securely across borders.

Current Status

SafePay is currently under active development. This submission showcases the platform architecture, core domain model, website, and technical foundation, with payment integrations and production deployment planned in the next development phases.
