SafeRoute AI – Women's Safety Route Assistant
Every day, millions of women face concerns about personal safety while traveling, especially during late hours or in unfamiliar areas. Traditional navigation apps focus primarily on the shortest or fastest route, often ignoring safety factors. We wanted to create a solution that empowers women to travel with greater confidence by prioritizing safety alongside convenience.
Our inspiration came from real-world concerns about harassment, unsafe neighborhoods, and the lack of accessible tools that help users make informed decisions about safer travel routes.
What It Does
SafeRoute AI is an intelligent safety-focused navigation assistant designed to help women choose safer routes.
Key features include:
- AI-powered safe route recommendations
- Route safety scoring based on crime data and community reports
- Real-time location sharing with trusted contacts
- Emergency SOS button for immediate assistance
- Safety alerts based on time of day and location risk
- Interactive map showing safer alternative routes
- Community-driven safety feedback and reporting
Instead of simply suggesting the shortest path, SafeRoute AI evaluates multiple factors to recommend routes that prioritize user safety.
How We Built It
We developed SafeRoute AI using modern web technologies and AI-assisted development tools.
Technology Stack
- Frontend: React.js / Next.js
- Backend: Node.js / Python APIs
- Maps & Navigation: Google Maps API or OpenStreetMap
- Database: Firebase / MongoDB
- AI Logic: Route risk analysis using historical safety indicators and user-generated reports
- Version Control: GitHub
The system combines route information, safety reports, and location data to generate a safety score for available routes and recommend the safest option.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the biggest challenges was the limited availability of publicly accessible safety and crime datasets suitable for a hackathon project.
Other challenges included:
- Designing a meaningful route safety scoring mechanism
- Balancing safety recommendations with travel efficiency
- Integrating real-time location sharing features
- Building a user-friendly interface within a limited timeframe
To address these issues, we used sample datasets and simulated risk data to demonstrate the concept effectively.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Built a functional prototype focused on a real social problem
- Successfully integrated mapping and route visualization
- Implemented emergency safety features
- Designed an AI-driven route recommendation approach
- Created a scalable solution that could be expanded with real-world data sources
What We Learned
Throughout this project, we gained valuable experience in:
- Building AI-powered civic technology solutions
- Working with mapping and geolocation services
- Designing user-centered safety applications
