Inspiration

Many navigation apps focus on finding the fastest route, but often ignore safety factors. We wanted to create a solution that helps people feel safer while traveling, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas. SAFEPATH was inspired by the need for smarter navigation that considers user safety alongside convenience.

What it does

SAFEPATH is a safety-focused navigation platform that helps users choose safer routes instead of only the fastest ones. It provides route safety indicators based on factors such as street lighting, nearby police stations, and crowd density. The platform also includes alerts and emergency-related information to improve travel confidence.

How we built it

We developed SAFEPATH using React Native for the mobile application and Firebase for authentication, database management, and notifications. A web prototype was built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to demonstrate the concept and user experience. The interface was designed with a clean and simple layout to ensure accessibility and ease of use.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was combining multiple safety factors into a clear and easy-to-understand routing experience. We also worked on designing an intuitive interface that presents safety information without overwhelming users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a working prototype that demonstrates how navigation can be enhanced with safety-focused insights. We are proud of building an interactive route visualization system and creating a concept that addresses a real-world urban safety problem.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned more about mobile development, Firebase integration, user-centered design, and building solutions within hackathon time constraints. We also gained valuable experience in identifying real-world challenges and turning them into practical technology solutions.
