NightSafe

Inspiration and Function

This project was created for IC Hack 20, and while coming with our idea we really wanted to focus on helping others. We wanted to create an app that will be used for the good of the community, especially young people, in the future. We decided on NightSafe: an app to help plan your journey before a night out, coordinating with other users and creating groups to stay safe together. The app ensures close communication and connection between all group members, sharing battery and location and providing easy access to phone numbers. The app also holds access to emergency services, though this is slightly more regulated (for obvious reasons) and less easy to operate than the simple, quick taps required to call another group member.

Technical Details

We hold user information in a MySQL database hosted on a Raspberry Pi, accessed remotely via the NightSafe Android app. Data is extracted and manipulated by SQL queries in Java, and the data is then passed to the app and displayed in the front-end using XML, developed in Android Studio. The app provides route and map options including Uber and Google Maps, accessed via APIs and integrated into the app's functionality.
