Inspiration

According to legalserviceindia.com, 40% to 60% woman in the world have faced street harrasments, mainly stalking, whistling, catcalling, sexual comments, staring/ogling. Also, 31% to 64% of men said that they have carried out such acts. Most of these cases go unheard. Probable reason for this can be: they are treated as small issues. source![link]https://www.legalserviceindia.com/legal/article-4558-statistical-data-of-violence-against-women-and-their-legal-status-in-india.html Women who relocate to new cities for job opportunities frequently encounter safety concerns and challenges, as they lack sufficient information about the safety of various areas within the city. The absence of reliable resources to assess the safety of these locations contributes to their vulnerability. Furthermore, when faced with negative experiences or unsafe situations, many women choose to remain silent and refrain from speaking out, perpetuating a cycle of silence and disempowerment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address these issues and develop comprehensive solutions that promote women's safety and encourage them to speak out against any instances of harassment or violence they may encounter. To address this concern, we came up with the idea of SafeHER!

What it does

SafeHER is an anonymous online platform where women can share their safety experiences in various city locations. Through sentiment analysis, we calculate a Safety Index for each place, helping women make informed decisions about their new surroundings. Privacy and security are our top priorities, ensuring a safe and supportive community for all users.

Key features include:

Anonymity: Users can share openly without revealing their identities. Location-Specific Entries: Women can share experiences along with specific locations. Sentiment Analysis: Advanced techniques quantify safety perceptions for each place. Safety Index: Objective safety scores for areas based on user experiences. Data Security: Robust measures ensure user privacy and data integrity. Empowerment: Providing valuable insights for safer decision-making when relocating.

The “wow" factor in our app lies in its unique focus on mental health, personalized safe location recommendations, and a user-centric design.

How we built it

▪️Idea Generation and Conceptualization: We started by brainstorming and identifying the key features and functionalities that would make SafeHER a valuable and empowering platform for women. We focused on creating a safe space for sharing experiences, providing recommendations, and fostering a supportive community. ▪️Front-End Development: Our front-end team used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to translate the design into an interactive and visually appealing website. We focused on responsive design to ensure the platform works seamlessly across different devices. ▪️Back-End Development: The back-end team worked on building the server, database, and APIs. We used a framework like Flask (Python) to handle routing, requests, and database interactions. User authentication, post storage, sentiment analysis, and recommendation algorithms were implemented here. ▪️Sentiment Analysis: We integrated natural language processing libraries and techniques to perform sentiment analysis on user-generated content. This allowed us to gauge the emotional tone of posts and provide appropriate support. ▪️Recommendation System: Leveraging machine learning, we developed a recommendation system that analyzed post content and sentiment to suggest safe locations. This feature enhanced user engagement and trust. ▪️Testing and Iteration: Rigorous testing was conducted to identify and fix bugs, optimize performance, and ensure the platform's reliability. User feedback played a crucial role in refining the user experience and ironing out any issues.

Challenges we ran into

▪️We found it challenging while creating an intuitive and user-friendly design that caters to the target audience while ensuring a seamless user experience. ▪️Integrating various features like user authentication, posting experiences, sentiment analysis, chatbots, and recommendations required careful planning and coordination. ▪️Thorough testing and addressing bugs across various scenarios and user interactions were time-consuming but essential. ▪️Keeping comprehensive documentation and maintaining the codebase for future updates and enhancements are ongoing tasks was indeed a challenging task

Accomplishments that we're proud of

▪️Creating a platform like SafeHER with the intention of fostering a safe and supportive online community for women has been a meaningful endeavor for us. ▪️Developing a feature that recommends safe places based on user-generated content and sentiment analysis that can enhance user trust and safety is one of our major milestones that have been achieved. ▪️Receiving positive feedback, testimonials, or stories from users about how SafeHER has made a difference in their lives is a meaningful achievement.

What we learned

▪️Through this project and the hackathon experience, we gained invaluable insights into collaborative teamwork, problem-solving, and rapid development. ▪️We deepened our understanding of user-centric design, honed our technical skills, and discovered the power of innovation under tight time constraints. ▪️Most importantly, we learned that creating a supportive space like SafeHER can have a profound impact, and we're motivated to continue using technology for positive change.

What's next for SafeHER

SafeHER's solution creates future scope through: ▪️City-wide Trends: Accumulated data can reveal broader safety trends in cities, aiding urban planning and safety initiatives. ▪️Collaborations: Potential partnerships with governments and organizations for joint safety initiatives. ▪️Policy Advocacy: Anonymized data can support evidence-based policy advocacy for safer urban environments. ▪️Crowdsourced Initiatives: Empowering communities to initiate safety measures and awareness campaigns. ▪️Global Expansion: Extending the platform's reach to benefit women internationally. ▪️Mobile App Integration: Creating a user-friendly mobile app for easy access and usability.
