Inspiration
We were inspired to create SafeGuard through our shared experiences as women. Throughout the planning process of the project, we reflected on what it meant to feel safe in our day-to-day lives. A reoccurring theme in our conversation was how safe we felt expressing our concerns and experiences with fellow women and gender minorities. This is how SafeGuard came to life!
What it does
SafeGuard is a mobile application centered towards support, awareness, and compassion. When you feel like you have experienced any form of negative experiences towards your gender, SafeGuard allows you to mark down where this experience happened. This allows fellow users to be made aware of areas where they should be more cautious in visiting. There is an option to add a comment to your post, where users can interact with your comment, initiating important conversations. Of course, this is entirely optional and not necessary to create a post.
How we built it
We created our design and prototype using Figma, where we planned the layouts and functionalities, carefully choosing the small details such as colors and fonts. We then used Swift and SwiftUI on Xcode to bring our application to life.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a few challenges when creating SafeGuard. Our team is composed of beginner developers; therefore, we delayed beginning our project due to prioritizing learning the basics of developing an app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Prior to SafeGuard, no one on our team had ever used Swift, but upon seeing the first simulation of the app, even if it was a blank slate, was so remarkable. Most notable is the supportive environment we built as a team, and how we were able to successfully build a prototype and get started on a remarkable app.
What we learned
We learned the importance of patience and resilience; we faced many setbacks and doubts, but we recognized the power an application like SafeGuard had and pushed through to get to where we are now.
What's next for SafeGuard
We hope to continue working on SafeGuard as a team and focus on implementing further features that will bring our community peace of mind.
