Inspiration

Many women have felt unsafe walking home, taking a cab, or meeting someone new, and in those moments it’s hard to unlock a phone, find a contact, and explain where you are. For 305 EmpowHER, I wanted to build something that works in one tap and doesn’t depend on someone noticing you’re in trouble. I named it SafeCircle because the idea is to bring your trusted circle with you wherever you go.

What it does

SafeCircle is a web app with four main features:

One-tap SOS: a large red button captures your live GPS location and alerts every trusted contact with a Google Maps link. Safety check-in timer: before a risky walk or meeting, you start a timer. If you don’t tap “I’m safe” in time, SafeCircle alerts your contacts automatically. This helps when you can’t reach your phone at all. Trusted contacts: you add and manage the people who receive your alerts. Alert history and helplines: every SOS and missed check-in is logged with a map link, and the key Indian emergency numbers (112, 1091, 181, 100, 102, 1930) are one tap away. How I built it Backend: Python and Flask, with a REST API for contacts, SOS, alerts and check-ins. Database: SQLite, so there is nothing to install or configure. Frontend: HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript, with the browser Geolocation API for the live location. Alerts: a notification layer that logs simulated SMS in demo mode and can send real texts through Twilio once credentials are set. Testing: I wrote automated API tests covering validation, SOS, the check-in timer and automatic escalation, and ran the full flow end to end before the demo. Challenges I ran into

The hardest part was the timer. I wanted it to work even if the user’s phone is taken or the page is closed, so the server decides when a check-in is overdue and escalates it, rather than relying on the browser. I also had to handle missing location permissions, so an SOS still goes out without coordinates instead of failing. There were setup problems along the way too, such as a broken pip and project folder layout, which taught me to make setup simpler.

Accomplishments I’m proud of A fully working app that goes from SOS press to alert in a single step. The check-in timer escalating on its own, which I think is the most useful safety feature. A clean, simple interface that someone can use under stress. Tests that cover the core safety flow.
