Inspiration

During critical emergencies, every single second matters—especially when it concerns the safety and protection of children. We were inspired to build a reliable, fast-response safety ecosystem tailored for Bangladesh, bridging the gap between immediate physical danger and rapid emergency intervention.

What it does

SafeChild is an advanced, mobile-responsive safety web app designed to improve child personal safety and emergency response. Key modules include:

Live GPS Map: An interactive mapping system powered by Leaflet.js and OpenStreetMap tiles that displays real-time user positioning and accuracy radius.
Voice-Activated SOS: Hands-free emergency trigger using the Web Speech Recognition API. Saying "help" automatically initiates emergency protocols, dials saved contacts, or routes directly to the 999 national emergency line.
First Aid AI Chat: A bilingual (English + বাংলা) conversational assistant powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash, offering immediate first-aid guidance with automated safety escalation keywords.

How we built it

Frontend: Built with React 18, TypeScript, and Vite, wrapped in a sleek, dark neon-accented UI.
AI Integration: Utilizes Gemini 2.5 Flash via a secure Vercel Serverless backend function (api/gemini-chat.ts) to ensure API keys remain strictly protected on the server side.
Location & Speech APIs: Integrated native HTML5 Geolocation API and Web Speech Recognition API for seamless hands-free operation.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring low-latency voice recognition and reliable offline-to-online emergency fallbacks (from saved guardians to the 999 national helpline) presented architectural hurdles. Additionally, keeping the Gemini API secure by routing queries through serverless endpoints while maintaining high-speed responses required careful optimization.

What we learned

We gained valuable insights into browser-native speech and geolocation capabilities, implementing secure serverless AI architectures with Vite/React, and designing high-contrast, emergency-focused UI/UX layouts.
