Inspiration
When I first saw that the theme of this hackathon was utopia, the first idea that came to my mind was safety and equal treatment for everyone. In an ideal world, everyone should feel safe regardless of their gender, identity, or background. However, in reality, many people (especially women and marginalized communities) often experience situations where they do not feel safe. As someone who advocates for women's rights, this is something I come across frequently. Safety concerns affect how people move through their daily lives, where they go, and whether they feel comfortable speaking up about their experiences. This inspired me to think about how a digital platform could help people share concerns, support each other, and access helpful resources. That idea led to the creation of SafeSpace.
What it does
SafeSpace is a web platform designed to encourage awareness, conversation, and access to resources related to safety. key features: Safety Map: Users can select a location on the map or type in a location and report a safety concern related to that area. Community Page: A space where users can share thoughts, experiences, or advice related to safety. Resources Page: A collection of helpful links and information related to safety, advocacy, and support services.
How we built it
SafeSpace was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was making sure the interactive features worked smoothly across different pages. For example, ensuring that community posts appear correctly after submission and implementing the map functionality so users can both click on locations and search for them. Another challenge was balancing functionality with design. I wanted the website to feel calm and welcoming rather than overwhelming, so it took some experimentation to find the right combination of layout, colors, and content.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One accomplishment I'm proud of is successfully building an interactive platform that combines several features ,including a safety reporting map, a community discussion space, and a resource hub within a clean and simple interface.
What we learned
Through this project, I learned more about structuring a multi-page website and implementing interactive features using JavaScript. I also learned how important user experience and design choices are when building a platform that deals with sensitive topics. Creating an environment that feels calm and approachable can make a big difference in how people interact with a website.
What's next for Safe_Space
In the future, Safe_Space could be expanded with additional features such as real-time reporting updates, and improved mapping features that allows communities to track safety patterns over time. Another improvement would be partnerships with organizations that work on safety and advocacy.
