Inspiration
If you know a safe space and want to share it with other women, we want your reviews. Many factors can make a place unsafe, and good research about destinations is crucial. As a woman who loves solo travel, I found it stressful and overwhelming to sift through thousands of reviews across multiple platforms just to find one trustworthy opinion. That inspired me to create SafeWander, a shared community space where women travellers support each other by sharing real safety experiences
What it does
SafeWander is a platform where solo women travelers share and discover honest safety reviews worldwide. Behind the scenes, an AI agent collects relevant safety information from various sources whenever a user clicks on the "Look for safety reviews" search. This AI-enriched data complements user reviews, bringing trusted, up-to-date insights all in one place, saving you from endless searching and making travel safer and easier.
How we built it
We used bolt.new to build a sleek, user-friendly UI, deployed the frontend on Netlify for fast and reliable hosting, and hosted our FastAPI backend on Render for seamless API management. Data is managed with Supabase, while the AI agent is powered by Together AI to gather and process safety-related information from various online sources.
Challenges we ran into
Collecting accurate, relevant safety data from diverse sources was complex. Balancing AI-generated content with authentic user reviews required fine-tuning to maintain trustworthiness. Additionally, coordinating infrastructure components, like hosting the frontend on Netlify, the FastAPI backend on Render, and managing data with Supabase, presented challenges in seamless integration and reliable performance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a community-driven, AI-enhanced platform that addresses a real pain point for solo women travelers. SafeWander brings together safety scores, relevant tags, and user reviews in one accessible place, helping women plan safer journeys with less hassle. And it's not just a proof of concept, it’s a live, working app that can be scaled up to become a useful, real-world product
What we learned
We learned that trusted, authentic information is absolutely crucial for solo travelers to feel secure. While AI can enhance this, it only works when users have full control over how it’s used and presented. We also found that delivering a clean, straightforward user experience is key, because if the app feels complicated or overwhelming, travelers won’t use it.
What's next for Safe Wander
To scale SafeWander into a sustainable, impactful platform, we’re exploring funding options such as sponsorships from travel brands, partnerships with tourism boards, and a freemium model that offers premium features for power users. Our goal is to grow the community, empower more women to share trusted safety information, and make solo travel safer worldwide.
