As COVID is already winding down, people are back traveling all around the world. Travelers might be confused in deciding where to stay if they are going to a specific place for their first time. This is why our group had the idea to make a website that could accommodate travelers' needs in analyzing areas with certain statistical evaluations (safety, amenities, medical establishments, attraction, skytrain stations)

What it does

It implements Google Maps API and will show viewers a highlighted map with different colors based on the crime rate. It also has tags corresponding to locations of skytrain stations, medical establishments, and attraction. This could help travelers to decide which neighborhood to stay in.

How we built it

We used a local host using docker and tomcat server. We also implemented Google Maps API using html, JavaScript, and JSP.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to make the website online, but was a bit confused on how to do it. As websites use Wordpress which accepts html, we are using JSP which includes java in the codes. So, we decided to go on with local host.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was something our group never learnt. None of us knew how to implement Google Maps API and how to use JavaScript. We learnt this and was able to produce this website.

What we learned

We learnt that hackathons are fun as it helps us to be fast thinkers. The 48 hour time window given to us is what makes it fun. So, everyone starts on the same line.

What's next for Safe Travels

  • We could do areas outside of Vancouver
  • Add more features such as bus stops, landmarks, etc.
