✨ Inspiration

Safe Travels was created with YOUR safety in mind. Ever invite somebody over and find out that they’re running later than usual? Feelings of anxiety or unease begin to set in, and you start to wonder, “are they okay?” With Safe Travels, there’s no more need to worry. Featuring a dark color scheme for extra discreteness along with font choices that scream “security”, you can wave your traveling worries goodbye. 👋

🤔 What it does

How to use Safe Travels:

First, adds a trusted contact or local police station as your buddy. 👮
Then, add the location of the place you're traveling to ✈️and how long to wait before sending your travel buddy an alert. ⌛
Go on that amazing get away! Even without internet, your travel buddy's got your back. 🔜
After your trip, simply un-prime the trip timer to let your buddy know you're okay. ✅ OR if something has gone wrong 🤞 your buddy will get an SMS notification that you have not returned along with your whereabouts.❎

App Features:

Home detection - app uses the users location to send the buddy an SMS that they've arrived early. 😌
Discrete Emergency - discretely dial the police or a travel buddy that you need help. 🚨

🔨 How we built it

Safe Travels was built using React/React Native, Express (NodeJS), CSS, Twilio, Create flow/db diagrams, and DALLE's open.ai. Aesthetics (color scheme, font, layout, etc.) were all created using Figma in a collaborative effort between our team. 🤓

😖 Challenges we ran into

It was our first time using React Native, so we needed to relearn how to do things that would normally work on a web stack. 😅
We ran into problems at every step of implementing API's and libraries. 😓
Learning the ins-and-outs of Sony Vegas took a while. 😐

🥳 Accomplishments that we're proud of

Designing a UI that the entire team is happy with. 😊
Creating cool and aesthetically pleasing graphics. 😎
Improved at developing MERN application. 🧠
Becoming more familiar with various web API's like Twilio, OAuth, OpenID. ⚡

🤩 What we learned

How to set up phone number authentication with Twilio. 📱 Using DALLE's open.ai to generate images used in the prototype. 🖥️ Creating a full Mongoose, Express, React, Node (MERN) stack app with all elements working together in harmony. 👨‍🦲⬇️ Learning to use Twilio for the first time. ❤️ Learning to use React Native for the first time. 👨‍🏫 Tailwind in React Native didn't save us time. 💫
