Safe Speak Tool For Women Across the GLOBE

Inspiration Safe Speak was inspired by the alarming rise of online harassment and gender-based abuse faced by women and girls worldwide. With the increasing reliance on digital communication, it became evident that a proactive approach was necessary to create a safer online environment. By leveraging AI technologies, we aimed to empower users to combat harassment and foster a culture of respect and support.

What it does Safe Speak is an AI-powered Chrome extension that detects and reports online harassment in real-time. It analyzes harmful language patterns on social media and other platforms, offering users customizable settings to filter and block abusive content. Additionally, Safe Speak provides sentiment analysis to assess emotional impact and connects users to mental health resources and educational modules on digital safety.

How I built it We built Safe Speak using a combination of Google AI tools, including Google Gemini for Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning capabilities. The extension was developed using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, allowing for seamless integration into the Chrome browser. We utilized AI Studio for model training and deployment, and AI Edge to enhance on-device privacy and performance.

Challenges I ran into One of the significant challenges we encountered was ensuring the accuracy of the language detection model. Striking a balance between sensitivity and specificity was crucial to avoid false positives. Additionally, integrating real-time monitoring capabilities while maintaining user privacy posed technical hurdles. User interface design also required careful consideration to ensure the tool was accessible and user-friendly. Accomplishments that we're proud of I am proud of successfully developing a functional prototype that effectively detects and reports harassment in real time. The positive feedback from our initial user testing indicated that the tool significantly contributed to users' sense of safety online. Moreover, we are thrilled that Safe Speak aligns with the UN's SDG 5, addressing gender equality and empowering women in the digital space. What I learned Through this project, we learned the importance of user-centered design in developing technology that addresses real-world problems. Collaborating as a diverse team allowed us to gain various perspectives, enhancing our understanding of the complexities surrounding online harassment. Additionally, we gained insights into leveraging AI technologies responsibly, balancing effectiveness with ethical considerations. What's next for Safe Speak Tool For Women Across the Globe Moving forward, we plan to expand Safe Speak’s capabilities by incorporating multilingual support to cater to a global audience. We aim to partner with organizations focused on women's rights and digital safety to promote the tool further. Future updates will include enhanced machine learning algorithms for better detection accuracy and community engagement features to foster support networks among users. Our ultimate goal is to create a robust platform that empowers women worldwide to navigate the digital landscape safely and confidently.
