Inspiration

Since the pandemic started, cyberbullying has been a large reason for the deteriorating mental health of many of our friends. We realized that there are little to no forums dedicated to talking about cyberbullying even though it was such a prevalent issue around the world. The forums that have cyberbullying channels are filled with researchers trying to collect data and very few people are there to talk about their issues. This inspired us to create a cyberbullying forum dedicated to sharing experiences and being supportive.

What it does

Our website has a landing page describing what we do. This leads to a login page. After logging in, a person can post a message talking about a cyberbullying experience or something they are struggling with right now. A person can also reply to people's messages with supportive comments or advice.

How we built it

We built the frontend using React.js. This includes the landing page, login page and home page. We built the backend using Node.js, Express.js and MongoDB.

Challenges we ran into

At the start, we tried to incorporate the app with React as the frontend and express as backend. However, certain imports and links failed and so we weren’t able to get the backend functionality. As a result, we had to go ahead with the react app only.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we were able to pull the skeleton of our app in time, even though we started really late and changed the topic midway. We are really happy that the team did not give up and supported each other even if we weren’t able to achieve the desired functionality.

What we learned

Attending our first online hackathon, we realized that it's better to pitch in the ideas way before the hackathon starts because it does save the development time. We also realized that time management plays a crucial factor while coding different components and files. Some team members also learned how to use Github for the first time and others made their first React app.

What's next for Safe Space

Browsing through the internet, we could not find any website that dealt with the same issue as we did and so we want to make Safe Space a major community so that people all over the world can have access to it and share their experiences. We can also take some more time to improve the UI by creating a logo and a common theme.
