Inspiration

Medical visits can be deeply overwhelming and unpredictable for neurodivergent individuals, frequently leading to intense anxiety and healthcare avoidance. While custom social stories are a proven clinical tool to ease this distress, creating them manually is time-consuming for families and caregivers. We wanted to bridge this gap by making cognitive accessibility effortless.

What it does

Safe Space Stories is an AI-powered platform that instantly generates personalized, visual social stories and comics for medical procedures like bloodwork, MRIs, and vaccinations. By transforming fear-inducing unknowns into relatable scenarios it helps reduce waiting-room anxiety, restores dignity, and provides a reliable coping tool. It considers many factors when generating the stories that are created including color theory (maximizing comforting colors) and the understanding of the placebo effect where research showing the idea of a solution for a scary problem will decrease the level of stress and fear of a patient.

How we built it

We designed and used Google Sites to make the website and took inspiration from current problems and research around medical anxiety.

Challenges we ran into

We had limited technical ability so we needed to be creative and work around that challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a more tailored solution for neurodivergent people to help with their anxiety around the medical system.

What we learned

How to create a website and clearly articulate a real life problem and our solution.

What's next for Safe Space Stories

Implement and create an image generation that is tailored towards this project specifically and can help users with their fears.
