Safe Space

Most of us are international students, and growing up, we never received formal sexual education. In our communities, sex education was either skipped entirely or treated as a taboo subject, leaving us with unanswered questions and misinformation. We understood the importance of comprehensive sex education but had no safe, judgment-free platform to learn about it.

This gap inspired us to create Sex Ed Chatbot—a platform designed to provide students like us with accurate, reliable information on sexual health, free from embarrassment or fear of judgment. We envisioned a space where students could ask questions about sensitive topics such as puberty, consent, and safe sex without stigma, and receive answers anytime they needed.

What We Learned Throughout the process, we learned just how widespread the issue of inadequate sex education is, especially in countries outside of the U.S. We researched the cultural nuances around sexual health in various regions, ensuring our chatbot would be culturally sensitive and accessible to diverse audiences.

How We Built It We used FastAPI for the backend, React for the frontend, and integrated Natural Language Processing (NLP) to create an intuitive chatbot interface. The chatbot allows users to interact in a conversational manner, ensuring ease of use for students. We also ensured privacy and anonymity to foster a comfortable environment for users.

Challenges We Faced One of the biggest challenges was balancing cultural sensitivity with the need for comprehensive education. We wanted the information to be accurate and relevant, but we also had to respect the cultural and societal norms of the regions we were targeting. Another challenge was ensuring the chatbot could handle a wide range of questions without sounding robotic or dismissive.

In the end, we built a platform we wish we had access to growing up—a space where students can learn about sexual health safely, without judgment, and at their own pace.

Next for Safe Space, we’re adding interactive games to make learning fun, personalized answers tailored to each user's needs, and expanding with additional resources like articles and videos for deeper learning. These updates aim to create a more engaging, supportive platform for sexual education.
