Inspiration Large events, campuses, and public spaces often rely on slow or fragmented reporting systems. Many people hesitate to report unsafe situations due to fear, uncertainty, or lack of anonymity.
We asked a simple question: What if reporting a safety concern was as easy as sending a message — and visible in real time to protect others?
SafeSignal was inspired by the idea that community awareness can reduce response time and prevent escalation. If information flows faster, people can act faster.
What it does SafeSignal is a real-time anonymous safety reporting platform.
Users can: Submit anonymous incident reports Instantly visualize reports on a live map Send a one-tap emergency signal See categorized risk levels in real time
The platform transforms individual reports into shared, actionable intelligence.
By reducing friction and increasing speed, we improve collective awareness. How we built it We built SafeSignal as a lightweight, deployable web application designed for speed and clarity.
Frontend: HTML, Tailwind CSS for modern UI Leaflet.js for interactive live maps Responsive, mobile-first layout
Backend: Firebase Realtime Database for instant synchronization Real-time listeners to update the map without refresh
AI Integration (Optional Enhancement): Gemini API to: Categorize reports Assign risk levels Generate concise summaries
The system architecture prioritizes: Low latency Real-time updates Anonymous submissions Clean user experience
Challenges we ran into: One major challenge was balancing simplicity with meaningful functionality.
We had to: Design a reporting flow that was fast but informative Ensure real-time updates worked smoothly Prevent UI clutter while displaying live data Structure anonymous reporting without authentication complexity
Another challenge was keeping the platform demo-friendly while still feeling production-ready.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Successfully implemented real-time map updates Designed a frictionless anonymous reporting system Integrated AI-based categorization for smarter alerts Created a clean, modern interface optimized for mobile users Built a system that feels immediately deployable
Most importantly, we transformed a serious real-world issue into a clear, working prototype in a short development window.
What we learned We learned that impactful solutions don’t have to be complex.
By focusing on: Speed Clarity Real-world usability we created something that feels scalable and practical.
We also learned the importance of designing for emotional context — safety tools must feel calm, supportive, and trustworthy.
What's next for Safe Signal Next steps include: Heatmap visualization of high-risk zones SMS or push notification alerts Admin dashboard for event organizers Predictive risk analysis using AI Role-based access for campus or event security teams Geofencing alerts within customizable safety radii
Our long-term vision is to make SafeSignal a deployable safety layer for campuses, concerts, festivals, and smart cities.
