Inspiration
Living in LA, we often see unhoused people struggling to find safe areas to stay. With situations changing often, it is difficult to find a comprehensive and reliable list of places that allow overnight parking. We also frequently see tourists visiting the UCLA area. We want travelers of all types to be able to afford and easily access shelters, whether those be indoor or outdoor shelters for people traveling in vehicles.
What it does
NightNest provides one site for travelers and car dwellers to see welcoming parking sites.
How we built it
We used React to create this site.
Challenges we ran into
As beginners with little to no React and full stack experience, we found it difficult to familiarize ourselves with its logic and syntax. We were ambitious in the beginning to implement various complex features like a dynamic map to pinpoint specific locations, but because of our novice skills we adapted to integrate more simpler features.
What we learned
We are proud of the progress we made from complete React beginners to creating a functional website. We learned a lot about functional components, props, and React hooks like useState() to dynamically make updates on interactive features like buttons. We all didn't have much experience in basic css either, so it was a challenge trying to get our project look visually appealing as well.
