Inspiration
We were inspired by recent overdose stories on the island. We are aware that harm reduction is sometimes more effective that banning a product altogether, so we decided to put together something that helps users access resources, gain information, and even be more cautious about where they're getting their drugs from.
What it does
Safe MTL is a website that integrates location services, a chatbot, and a heatmap to tell users how likely what they bought was laced, information about the drug they want to take, and where to find testing kits near them in Montreal.
How we built it
We used Wix's new velo application to integrate the front end and back end of our website seamlessly.
Challenges we ran into
The most challenging part of this project was trying to connect the code we wrote in python (our backend, with maps and chatbot) to what we wanted to display on the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to put together our work, and formatting in a way that's easy to use and understand.
What we learned
We learned how to use python's libraries to webscrape for useful information we can train our chatbot with. In addition to this, python's nltk library to find synonyms for words users might use. We learned a lot about front-end dev, as most of us are very new to it. In addition to this, since this was our first hackathon, we learned a lot about its structure and time limits!
