Inspiration

Our goal is to support children who may hesitate to ask their parents important questions. Many parents often assume that their kids will just pick up on essential life lessons and concepts through observation or experience, leading to significant gaps in their understanding. This lack of communication can leave children feeling confused or uncertain about critical topics. Furthermore, our resource can serve as a comprehensive guide for parents or guardians who might struggle with initiating conversations about these sensitive subjects, helping them approach their children with confidence and clarity.

What it does

The text provides information on various topics, including how to interact with law enforcement, key safety tips, personal hygiene for both teenagers and children, social etiquette, and mental health. Additionally, it features quizzes on each topic that users can take multiple times to reinforce their understanding. These quizzes are designed to help users retain information effectively.

How we built it

We built the website using Visual Studio Code, utilizing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Each file contains code for a specific topic we want to display on the site. The code is largely similar, with minor tweaks to modify the formatting of each page. We created a background pattern on a canvas and displayed it on the screen to make the website more visually appealing for kids. Additionally, we used ChatGPT to generate ideas for the quizzes featured on each topic.

Challenges we ran into

We faced a challenge when choosing a coding language, as we were still in the process of learning Python. We tried watching tutorials on using Python for web and app development but quickly realized it was too advanced for our current skill level. Therefore, we decided to use HTML, which is easier to learn and use. Although it took us some time to figure out the specific coding techniques needed to implement all the features we planned, we eventually got there.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have produced what we envisioned, despite our limited knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Throughout the hackathon, we learned many new concepts that we hope to apply in future projects.

What we learned

We learned how to create a website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Additionally, we discovered the importance of being specific when asking AI, like ChatGPT, for images.

What's next for Safe Kids

We will conduct additional research on other topics that kids need to learn or may need refreshers on. I will also include more options and information on various subjects that we couldn't cover previously, making this website more inclusive for children with a range of conditions.
