Inspiration

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to prevail, the likelihood of this pandemic becoming endemic increases each day. The last two years have been quite the ride, with economic devastation and social repercussions as people experienced and continue to experience new levels of mental fatigue, burnout and inequality. Given the opportunity to prevent the spread of the virus to reduce said consequences, who wouldn’t want to?

Vaccinations have always been a topic of controversy, and to achieve herd immunity, large proportions of the population need to be vaccinated. Yet vaccine hesitancy is still prevalent within communities, disproportionately found within specific communities at times. Vaccine education has been recommended as the best way to tackle vaccine hesitancy. But it isn’t just vaccines that are shrouded by misconceptions. Misinformation about the effects of the virus, where the virus originated, how it originated and who it affects the most riddles the internet. We were inspired to create Safe Haven by the urgent need for simple and effective scientific communication and education to deconstruct the misconceptions and biases surrounding COVID-19 and the resultant pandemic.

What it does

Safe Haven aims to provide a safe space for users to learn about everything COVID-19. It starts with an informative quiz that gently tests users to recognize what biases or misconceptions the user may hold. Based on the results of the quiz, Safe Haven recommends the resources for the user to understand and learn on topics they might be unsure about. These resources are pulled from government websites and other reputable sources and may include graphs generated from datasets provided by Geotag Ignition or minigames to explain concepts such as the parabolic nature of virus infection. Finally, Safe Haven displays statistics of how other users answered the informative quiz based on region, for users to understand where they are relative to their neighbours. An optional quiz is given at the end for users to provide feedback on the user experience and whether Safe Haven accomplished its goal of helping users feel more informed.

How we built it

Safe Haven was designed using Figma and its animation plugins.

Challenges we ran into

Learning to animate, it was difficult to get things to render properly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Having a working demo and being able to potentially start conversations regarding how the covid-19 pandemic has exasperated the inequalities within our systems and the importance of scientific communication.

What we learned

We learnt how to use Figma and its animation plugin, fig motion!

What's next for Safe Haven

The next steps would include providing a platform to directly contribute to charities that are supporting marginalized communities within the users' own community, as well as a medium to converse with others through threads on the focused Topics of Safe Haven.
