Inspiration
There are over a 100,000 people experiencing homelessness. I wanted to create a project that addresses their situation and provides meaningful assistance.
What it does
Safe Haven connects individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty with vital resources like pantries, shelters, open access centers and etc. Users can navigate through the map using the legend as a guide. They can also use the search bar to enter their coordinates and zoom into their location, this makes it easier to find services nearby.
How we built it
We created the map using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Leaflet. To pinpoint the coordinates of addresses, I utilized a coordinate finder tool. Additionally, websites like nyc.gov were invaluable for gathering information about various resources.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges ran into were adding a legend and search bar to the map.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of building a user-friendly platform that enhances accessibility to essential resources for individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty.
What we learned
I learned how to add a legend to the map and utilize different tools to create my project.
What's next for Safe Haven
Future improvements could include replacing colored markers with icons, such as a house for shelters and a basket for pantries.
