Inspiration

Excessive heat and air pollution endangers the health of pregnant people and their babies. A solution is urgently needed to notify pregnant people of upcoming heat and high-pollution events and to educate pregnant people how best to keep themselves and their babies safe when these events occur.

What it does

Safe Go Preggo streamlines the process of notifying pregnant people of upcoming heat and high-pollution events and giving simple, evidence-based instructions to keep pregnant people and their unborn babies safe. Instructions are comprehensive and location-specific. Language is purposefully written to be appropriate for pregnant people of all education levels and is offered in several languages.

How we built it

We built a dashboard using a number of APIs including Google Maps API for address to longitude latitude conversion, weather api to get heat index and air quality for a specific location, and GPT 5 to generate personalized action plans.

The dashboard is built with a Flask backend using the Dash framework to build out a polished MVP.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some problems in sending out push notifications in the form of SMS messages. These arose because of legislative changes that are stricter when it comes to restricting spam messages. Given proper time and funding we would be able to create a system that incorporates this better.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This will be the first application tailored to pregnant people, one of the most vulnerable patient groups, that comprises the most evidence-based recommendations during extreme heat and pollution events and communicates those recommendations effectively.

What we learned

We learned standard risk tools to communicate risks during conditions of combined extreme heat and high-pollution do not exist and that further investigations are needed to accurately generate and validate these tools. We also learned that recommendations for pregnant people during extreme heat and pollution events are currently difficult to research - further validating the utility of this tool.

What's next for Safe Go Preggo

We have purposefully designed this MVP to allow for future evaluations of its impact with improvements to be made with future iterations based on this research. This MVP also allows for generation of analogous applications for additional populations at risk during at extreme heat and high-pollution events, including individuals with cardiovascular disease, asthma, overweight or obesity, and extremes of age. These applications could be marketed toward condition-specific organizations (e.g., the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association) including and to local health departments to augment climate-resilience efforts by ensuring local vulnerable populations are connected with the most up to date resources.
