Inspiration

Several of our team members have food allergies themselves or in their families. We know first-hand how food allergies impact daily life– creating anxiety and challenges in finding safe food in restaurants. When an allergic reaction occurs, our health, wellbeing, and income are impacted in negative, and often life-altering ways. Our project aims to create a positive impact for those who suffer from food allergies and the families who support them, creating better physical and emotional health and increased financial well-being.

Globally, 240 million people suffer from food allergies, turning the simple act of dining out into a potentially life-threatening experience. Current legislation addressing this issue is often reactive and triggered by preventable fatalities, our solution gives regulators and industry a uniform solution to address this growing issue.

What it does

SAFE DISH CERTIFIED presents a groundbreaking solution that transforms dining safety through an immersive VR training and MR enterprise platform tailored for restaurants and regulatory bodies. Our primary focus is on fostering a secure environment for individuals with food allergies.

Traditional food safety training merely instructs food service personnel on their tasks, but Safe Dish Certified utilizes Virtual Reality (VR) to revolutionize training, ensuring every meal is safe for every customer in every restaurant. Our platform delivers a hands-on VR experience, offering specialized training tracks for servers, food service workers, chefs, and management, making it customizable and scalable.

Our VR training consists of modules, starting with onboarding using a customizable system that incorporates the restaurant's own recipes and processes. Employees engage in immersive learning, undertaking their assigned tasks to assess their existing knowledge. In the second phase, they learn from their mistakes without real-life consequences.

Safe Dish Certified doesn't stop at addressing food allergies; it also helps restaurants cater to other customer concerns, such as dietary preferences and sustainable sourcing. By becoming Safe Dish Certified, restaurants can ensure the safety of every meal, fostering a secure dining environment. Our cutting-edge technology offers both immediate applications and long-term capabilities, addressing the growing need for secure health environments. By leveraging Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the restaurant industry, we establish integrated networks facilitating seamless sharing of customer preferences.

How we built it

We developed our VR teaching tool using the Meta Quest 3 and created a product roadmap for an industry wide XR enterprise safety solution. We built SAFE DISH CERTIFIED based on research surrounding the UN SDG goal 3.4-- to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable disease through prevention and treatment.

Challenges we ran into

Addressing a single health and regulatory issue that we deliver a XR solution to while applying our solution to a larger integrated network that has wide ranging applications in a loosely regulated global marketplace. The challenge of forming a group with people from all different backgrounds and disciplines that can work together to create a uniform project was stressful. Learning how to work with the other team members by complimenting each other's strengths in such a short period of time was a challenge that all team members overcame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Food connects people and this project created a connection within our team. We're excited to have created a robust system that can be used globally to make our lives-- and the lives of anyone suffering from food allergies-- safer. As the project came together, we realized that our system has larger applications that we originally envisioned. It can be used as a template for wide-ranging industry and regulatory innovation through XR technology.

There is a large need for regulatory and industry specific training and safety tools that utilize the XR industry and our project’s product has wide ranging applications.
