Our inspiration for this app was the steady rise in road accidents especially with our younger and new drivers. We wanted to create an app that addresses the importance of safety while providing our audiences with a fun and rewarding experience.
Our app has a lot of features, but our main feature is our offline mode. Unlike "Do not disturb", our offline mode will completely turn off your phone with a popup saying "offline mode" and keep track of how long you stay off your phone. That amount can be redeemed with rewards, so the more you stay off your phone, the more rewards you can earn. Additionally, we have a map system with in-built communication, a profile screen, and additional tips and quizzes for your educational purposes. Alongside that, our app can be translated into 3 languages; Spanish, Arabic, and English. We also have a speaker button that plays the properties found on the screen out loud.
We built our app on Code.org. Occasionally we did use JavaScript, but we mainly utilized the block system on Code.org with in-built JavaScript coding.
We faced a lot of disparities within our coding and app design experience, so our abilities to work on the app were different. We also had limited design and functionality tools as we were on Code.org where there weren't many functions to utilize. Time was also an issue since we had to balance updating our app and our schoolwork, ensuring we gave equal time to both spectrums.
We were extremely proud when we won 2nd place in our school-wide app competition under our Seminar Honors class for our project addressing one of the UN SDG goals. We were also proud of working through our challenges and being able to maneuver through each other's strengths and weaknesses by providing each of our members equal work. We were able to work together and work productively by managing our time to make our app a strong contender. We also accomplished our main goal with our app to expand and show the community the change our app can bring when we were given positive feedback from 2 judges analyzing our app. We were able to utilize our teamwork and perseverance to create an app for our communities with the hopes of creating safer roads for all.
We learned the act of teamwork and time management with our app. We were able to learn the concept of perseverance when it came to the different challenges we faced while building our app. We were also able to strengthen our coding and app design skills. We learned how to utilize all our Code.org functions, though they were limited, to ensure our app was designed and functioned to the best of its abilities.
We would like to showcase our app and bring change to our communities. We want our younger and newer experienced drivers, alongside experienced drivers, to educate themselves about the importance of road safety by having a rewarding experience through our app.
