What it does
Inspiration
Travelers heading to offbeat places like high-altitude treks, mountain monasteries and forest trails often lose network exactly where they need route and safety information most. And the "hidden gems" they find online are hard to trust: some are fake, unsafe or already overcrowded.
We started SafarNama to fix the trust problem. Now we want to fix the connectivity problem too.
What exists today
SafarNama is our live, community-verified travel platform for India's offbeat destinations. It already has hidden-gem submissions with a moderator verification pipeline, an AI trip planner, a crowd meter that suggests alternatives to overcrowded spots, stays and local guides, and a points-based rewards wallet.
The offline feature described below does not exist yet. It is what we plan to build at Hackyard Build 2026.
What we plan to build
An offline-first trail companion on top of SafarNama. Before leaving coverage, a traveler downloads a verified route with its stops, trail and safety notes, and nearby alternatives. Everything then works with no network, and it syncs again when the traveler is back online.
In 24 hours we will complete one end-to-end flow:
- Pick a verified route.
- Download it for offline use.
- Switch to airplane mode.
- Open the route with full details and map.
How we'll build it
- Service workers and IndexedDB to cache route data on the device
- Verified route data served from our existing Convex backend
- Leaflet map drawn from cached route data
- Tested in airplane mode, including awkward cases like an interrupted download or an outdated route
Challenges we expect
- Keeping downloads small and reliable on weak connections
- Handling stale data when a route is updated after download
- Making failures understandable to the user
What's next
Extend verified offline routes to more regions, including Northeast India, and let local contributors update routes that sync when travelers reconnect.
