Inspiration
Travel planning is often fragmented across multiple apps. One app handles maps, another handles trains and flights, another helps with budgeting, while safety information is usually an afterthought. We wanted to solve this by bringing the most important parts of a journey into one intelligent platform.
That idea led to SafarAI — an AI-powered travel companion designed to help users plan, navigate, budget, and travel more safely without constantly switching between different services.
What it does
SafarAI combines AI-powered travel planning, safety intelligence, transit information, and budget management into one unified experience.
Its AI Travel Assistant can create multi-day itineraries, recommend local places, explain cultural taboos, and translate useful phrases. It uses the openai/gpt-oss-120b model through the Groq SDK for fast, context-aware responses.
The Safety Intelligence system provides geo-safety scores, emergency contacts, embassy information, SOS resources, and a Safe Path Finder that can prioritize safer and better-populated routes.
Through its integration with Railverse, SafarAI is designed to connect different transportation options including trains, buses, and flights while providing information such as availability, platform locations, and delays.
It also provides predictive budgeting and expense tracking, including cost projections, expense categorization, and automatic currency conversion.
How we built it
SafarAI is built as a modern web ecosystem using React, Vite, Next.js, Tailwind CSS, and Supabase.
The main application is a Vite + React SPA containing the primary dashboard, safety portal, and AI chat experience. We organized the application into reusable components, pages, layouts, and service layers to keep the system modular and scalable.
We also built a Next.js application for server-rendered pages, community sharing, SEO-focused landing pages, and dynamic metadata.
For AI capabilities, we integrated the openai/gpt-oss-120b model through the Groq SDK, while Supabase provides the database layer. The project also connects with Railverse to build a broader mobility ecosystem.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was bringing several complex travel features together without making the experience feel fragmented.
AI itinerary generation, safety intelligence, transportation data, budgeting, and future booking capabilities all require different types of data and logic. Designing an architecture that could support these features while remaining maintainable was a major part of the development process.
Another challenge was making the AI experience genuinely useful rather than simply generating generic travel responses. We focused on making the assistant context-aware so that recommendations could be connected to the user's destination, itinerary, transportation needs, and budget.
We also had to design the platform with future integrations in mind, particularly real-time transportation updates, collaborative planning, offline AI, and booking functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that SafarAI evolved beyond being a simple AI travel chatbot.
We created a unified platform combining AI travel planning, safety intelligence, mobility information, and budgeting into a single experience.
We are especially proud of making travel safety a core feature rather than an afterthought. Features such as geo-safety scores, emergency resources, and the Safe Path Finder give SafarAI a practical purpose beyond simply recommending destinations.
We also established the foundation for deeper integration with Railverse, allowing SafarAI to eventually connect trip planning with real-world transportation and booking.
Most importantly, we built the project with a clear long-term vision rather than limiting it to the current feature set.
What we learned
Building SafarAI taught us that creating a useful AI product involves much more than connecting an LLM to a user interface.
The quality of an AI experience depends heavily on context, data, system architecture, and user experience. We learned how different services and technologies need to work together to create something that feels like one cohesive product.
We also learned to design for scalability from the beginning. Features such as real-time synchronization, transportation integration, offline AI, and collaborative planning influenced many of our architectural decisions.
Most importantly, we learned that a good travel assistant should not only answer "Where should I go?", but also help answer "How do I get there, how much will it cost, and how can I travel safely?"
What's next for SafarAI
SafarAI has a much bigger vision ahead.
Our next phase includes real-time collaborative trip planning, where groups can create shared planning lobbies, edit itineraries together, vote on destinations, and automatically split expenses.
We also plan to introduce cross-platform notifications for check-in times, transportation delays, and safety alerts.
The next major milestone is deeper integration with Railverse through a native booking engine, enabling users to purchase train, flight, and local transit tickets through a unified checkout experience while receiving live PNR, platform, and delay updates.
Our long-term goal is an offline-first and spatial AI travel assistant. SafarAI will eventually be able to provide essential AI assistance without cellular connectivity, while AR destination overlays could display historical information, restaurant ratings, and safety directions directly through a phone camera.
Ultimately, we want SafarAI to become more than a travel planner — an intelligent companion that stays with travelers from planning their journey to reaching their destination and getting home safely.
