Inspiration
I got inspired by Indore city in India — especially the people’s mindset toward clean and sustainable living. The city is remarkably clean, and there's a strong collaborative relationship between the local government and the citizens. I want to replicate this model across all of India.
My second inspiration comes from the Clean India Movement (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan). It instilled a sense of responsibility in citizens to take action themselves and promote sustainable living.
I also see a business opportunity here — not just to improve cleanliness, but also to leverage advanced technologies like cleaning robots for areas that are dangerous or unreachable by humans.
I want to build a community platform where:
People can report problems (e.g., garbage, drainage).
Authorities or citizens can take action.
Participants in clean-up drives can earn eco-rewards.
Eco-friendly products like soaps, candles, wet bags, metal dustbins, etc., are sold via a marketplace built into the app.
Sales and engagement contribute to both awareness and sustainability.
What it does
The app will enable:
Citizens to report issues (like garbage, clogged drains) by sharing location + images.
Authorities or experts to take action based on submissions. Citizens can vote on issues to prioritize them.
Experts and cleaners to earn money or rewards based on community support and completion.
Eco-friendly businesses to sell their products in-app to environmentally conscious buyers.
Users to earn "EcoPoints" by participating in cleaning drives or supporting the platform.
EcoPoints can be redeemed for discounts, especially on mass transit for eco-conscious travel.
How we built it
Started with research on pain points, rewards, and penalties related to urban cleanliness.
Created a wireframe to visualize app features and workflows.
Designed the UI using Figma, adding features and refinements to enhance usability.
Used the Bolt platform to build and deploy the MVP.
Faced and resolved challenges with Figma-Bolt integration, including image loading errors and component mismatches.
Challenges we ran into
Initial pushback: People were hesitant about the idea, but eventually understood the mission to promote sustainability.
Technical hurdles: Learning Bolt was tough — required watching many tutorials to deploy and present the app.
Faced errors in loading Figma designs into Bolt, especially missing images and broken components. Eventually resolved through updates and debugging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We turned the vision into reality.
Created a functional, community-driven platform focused on sustainability.
Ready for real-world testing and refinement.
What we learned
Community mindset is everything: Real change begins when people understand the importance of sustainability and take ownership of their environment.
Building tech for real-world problems is hard but rewarding: Creating an app that connects citizens, government, and businesses takes deep thought, planning, and persistence.
User education is crucial: We realized that many people didn't initially believe in the idea — we had to communicate the purpose clearly to gain trust and participation.
Design and development need to work hand-in-hand: Challenges while connecting Figma to Bolt taught us how important it is to align design tools and development platforms early.
Learning new tools takes time: Mastering Bolt and solving integration issues wasn’t easy. It taught us patience, problem-solving, and the value of documentation and tutorials.
Sustainability needs incentives: People are more likely to participate when there are rewards, whether that's recognition, eco-points, or practical benefits like discounted transit.
Collaboration drives impact: We learned that the best results come when citizens, experts, and local authorities work together with transparency and shared goals.
What's next for safai sitara community-driven eco sustainability app
Our mission is to systematize cleanliness in a way that eliminates the risk to human life, especially in extreme conditions.
Next steps:
Encourage behavioral change at the grassroots level.
Promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
Use real-time data to compare cleanliness efforts across societies, cities, states — and evaluate governance performance.
Provide a transparency dashboard showing which areas are clean, what actions are being taken, and by whom.
Expand the app on a national scale if the pilot is successful.
We believe in the power of community, technology, and responsible business to drive change.
Thank you for supporting Safai Sitara!
