Inspiration
The inspiration behind this project was to foster a thriving community of Computer Science students at Morgan State University. We wanted to create a space where students could collaborate, share their passion for technology, and grow together. Inclusivity and diversity were also key motivations, leading us to integrate a voice AI assistant to make the website accessible and welcoming to all users, regardless of their technical background.
What it does
The SACS website serves as a central hub for the Society for the Advancement of Computer Science (SACS). It offers features such as event management, member registration, and a platform for sharing resources and information.
How we built it
We developed the website using Next.js for the frontend, ensuring a modern and responsive user interface. The backend is powered by Firebase, providing real-time database capabilities. NextUI and Tailwind CSS was used for styling, making the site visually appealing and easy to navigate. A voice AI was also integrated into the website to guide users on how to use it and also to learn more about SACS.
Challenges we ran into
The development process went smoothly overall, thanks to thorough planning. While there were no major challenges, I did encounter some minor adjustments, such as fine-tuning the design for better user experience and optimizing the website for different devices. These refinements allowed me to create a more polished final product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of successfully creating a fully functional website that meets the needs of the SACS community. The site not only looks great but also performs well, offering a seamless user experience. I also managed to overcome several technical hurdles, which significantly improved our problem-solving skills.
What we learned
Throughout the project, I learned a lot about modern web development practices, particularly in using Next.js and Firebase. We also gained valuable experience in working as a team, managing tasks, and overcoming technical challenges.
What's next for SACS Website
Moving forward, we plan to add more interactive features to the website, such as a discussion forum and real-time event notifications. We also aim to continuously improve the user experience and expand the site’s functionality to better serve the SACS community.
