Inspiration
Growing up in India, I was surrounded by sacred groves — patches of forest preserved not by law, but by belief. These were more than trees. They were altars, guardians, stories. While most maps show the physical world, I wanted to map the spiritual one. This project began with a question: What if we could preserve faith, memory, and culture through geography?
What it does
This cultural map brings together fifteen sacred groves across India, each tied to a unique belief system. Using Google My Maps, it marks these locations and overlays them with descriptions and imagery that reveal the spiritual significance, oral traditions, and community rituals attached to them. It is an immersive guide to India’s living forests of faith.
How we built it
I began by researching lesser-known groves across different states in India. I shortlisted fifteen from various regions and gathered visuals, coordinates, and folklore for each. Using Google My Maps, I pinned each grove precisely, added detailed cultural narratives, and connected the visuals to provide a unified experience. The project was shaped with care and respect for regional diversity.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest hurdles was verifying the uniqueness of each grove and making sure it had cultural backing. Image availability for remote groves was another challenge. Lastly, balancing storytelling with respectful representation was a conscious effort throughout.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud to have curated an interactive map that brings together culture, spirituality, and geography in a way that’s rarely seen. The project does not just showcase location data — it gives voice to traditions that are silently vanishing.
What we learned
I learned how powerful maps can be when they go beyond navigation. They can become tools for storytelling, cultural preservation, and awareness. Technically, I learned how to use Google My Maps effectively, how to organize layered narratives, and how visual placement impacts interpretation.
What's next for Sacred Groves of India – A Cultural Map
I plan to expand this map into a larger community project. Local users will be able to submit groves from their regions with stories and rituals, turning it into a collaborative cultural atlas. I also plan to integrate basic data overlays — like canopy density and biodiversity indices — to show how belief-driven conservation sustains real ecosystems.
