Inspiration

~200K TONNES of food is wasted in restaurants and clubs in UK, which if saved could feed ALL 250K of London’s hungry kids for 2 YEARS. ~27% of diners reported that they left uneaten food on their plate when dining out at restaurants; of these diners, ~41% of them said they left food because the portion size was too big. Further, ~80% of consumers believe they waste food because they can’t accurately estimate portion sizes before ordering.

What it does

From cutting-edge AI to monitoring & reducing food waste, to a curated foodie community – SAAVO helps conscious customers enjoy food experiences without the guilt of food waste, by helping measure, manage and motivate the reduction of food waste.

How we built it

Used market research and discussion with industry experts to funnel down the problem. Built a solution with a 10x vision and understood the near-term action items and feasibility. We then worked on understanding wherein the user journey the product could be introduced and how we could rightly engage diners into joining our mission. Finally, through Figma, we envisioned our solution and charted out important metrics.

Challenges we ran into

Funneling down a broad problem like food waste into its core issues and then figuring out a solution that could tangibly solve the problem was crucial, difficult, and extremely time-consuming. Then, understanding current providers and pin-pointing why existing solutions don't work was key before understanding

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built from scratch within 36 hours, we have:

• a seamless and functional wireframe
• user interviews & validation
• Built the business model and unit economics
• charted the growth journey and scalability for the year to come

What we learned

The deep-rooted issues with food waste and how important saving food is for our longer-term sustainability goals. We had a great time as a team leveraging each of our experiences, to come up with the right solution to the problem at hand.

What's next for Saavo

Post-HackLBS, we're hoping to move forward and dig deeper to understand the user problems and iterate our solution to curate a seamless food-saving journey for our diners.
