Inspiration

We noticed that many senior citizens around us struggle with basic smartphone tasks like sending messages, using apps, or identifying scams. Even small things can feel confusing and stressful.

We also saw real cases where seniors were tricked by fraud messages or avoided using technology completely because they were afraid of making mistakes.

This made us think what if they had someone always there to guide them patiently? That’s how the idea of Saarthi AI came.

What it does

Saarthi AI is a simple, voice-based assistant that helps senior citizens use technology step by step.

It listens to the user, understands what they want to do, and then guides them in very simple instructions.

It can:

Help with everyday tasks like sending messages Warn users about scam messages or suspicious links Give step-by-step guidance instead of complex instructions Provide a Practice Mode where users can safely try things in a fake WhatsApp environment

The main idea is to make seniors feel confident and safe while using their devices.

How we built it

We built Saarthi AI as a simple web app focusing on ease of use.

Used React to create a clean and easy interface Added voice input and output using browser speech APIs Used AI to generate simple step-by-step responses Created a mock WhatsApp interface for practice mode Implemented basic scam detection using keywords and logic

We focused more on making it easy to use rather than making it complex.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was simplifying everything.

It’s easy to build features, but making them simple enough for seniors to understand was difficult. We had to rethink how instructions are given.

Another challenge was creating a realistic practice environment without building a full app like WhatsApp.

We also had to balance between adding features and keeping the app clean and not overwhelming.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we built something that actually solves a real problem.

Instead of just giving tutorials, we created something that guides users while they are doing the task.

The Practice Mode is something we really like because it allows seniors to learn without fear.

Most importantly, the app feels supportive and not confusing.

What we learned

We learned that building for seniors is very different from building for regular users.

Clarity, patience, and simplicity matter much more than advanced features.

We also understood how important trust and safety are when it comes to technology.

And we realized that AI is most powerful when it is used to make people feel comfortable, not just to automate things.

What's next for Saarthi AI – Digital Companion for Seniors

We want to improve Saarthi AI further by:

Adding support for more apps like UPI and calls Making it work in regional languages like Hindi and Marathi Adding real-time screen understanding Improving scam detection using better AI Allowing family members to assist remotely

Our goal is to make Saarthi AI a tool that seniors can truly rely on every day.
