Welcome to the Fruit Pantry Assistant! This app is designed to help you discover delicious and healthy recipes right from your fruit bowl. Have you ever opened your fridge, found nothing appealing, and missed the gems sitting in your fruit bowl? This app is here to change that.

Inspiration

The idea for the Fruit Pantry Assistant was sparked by my common habit of overlooking the potential of the fruit bowl when seeking something to eat and going straight to the fridge, but then seeing "nothing good" and retreating back to my bed. From the fridge to the fruit bowl is a journey towards healthier options and creative meal ideas. This app bridges the gap between these two points, transforming simple fruits into mouthwatering recipes.

How It Works

This project has been a learning journey. I delved into the world of object detection and recognition, training custom models like YOLOv8. The nuances of semantic understanding and hyperparameter tuning were explored to enhance the accuracy of fruit identification.

To build the app, I started by collecting and formatting a dataset for model training. The YOLOv8 model detects fruits in images, and these detections are then passed to the ChatGPT API to generate recipe suggestions. The web app itself was created using Flask, with an intuitive UI/UX design. Users can upload images, view fruit detections, and explore healthy recipes.

Additionally, the app offers an editing functionality, allowing users to adjust detected fruits if they believe the model got it wrong. This ensures accurate results and personalized recipe suggestions.

Challenges and Deployment

The journey wasn't without challenges. Deploying the app on platforms like Heroku came with obstacles, particularly related to library dependencies. However, this hasn't deterred the project's vision. While the current link might show an error page, I'm committed to resolving these challenges within the coming week to offer you a fully functional web app experience.
