💎Inspiration

Smell is one of the most overlooked human senses, yet it carries powerful connections to memory, emotion, and environment. In a world dominated by visual media and screens, olfaction often goes unnoticed, despite its ability to evoke vivid recollections or shape emotional states. We were inspired by the idea that scent could be intentionally captured, explored, and revisited, transforming an invisible sensory layer into something practical and meaningful. Observing how people take smell for granted — from surveys showing students prioritizing smartphones over scent to the lack of vocabulary for describing aromas — motivated the creation of a tool that could make olfactory perception tangible.

👃What it does

Linger expands human access to smell, turning scent into a medium for memory, exploration, and reflection. The product has three main interactions:

  • 🕵️‍♀️Detect: Connects to a wearable that senses ambient chemical compounds. Users can capture specific scents and save them as memory signals. Each signal is represented as a coloured orb that encodes emotional and environmental context.
  • 📱Library: Stores captured scents as a personal sensory archive. Each entry includes details such as date, location, mood, and associated memories, allowing users to revisit and reflect on their experiences.
  • 🗺️Map: Visualizes scents in the user’s environment, showing saved scents, similar scents, and new discoveries. Linger can guide users along scent trails, turning ordinary spaces into interactive, olfactory experiences.

By combining detection, visualization, and exploration, Linger transforms smell from a background sensation into a tool for memory, learning, and emotional regulation.

👷How we built it

We prototyped the product in Figma, focusing on interfaces that clearly communicate invisible sensory information. Visual orbs represent scent signals, encoding chemical and emotional data while allowing users to customize colour and texture. The wearable device integrates with the app to capture ambient scents in real time. We designed interactions to be seamless, so that capturing, saving, and revisiting scents feels natural and emotionally resonant rather than technical.

🚨Challenges we ran into

Representing scent digitally was the biggest challenge. Unlike visual or auditory information, smell has no widely shared symbolic language, making it difficult to translate into a digital medium. We also had to consider the emotional and mnemonic weight of scent: each captured smell carries personal significance, and the system needed to reflect that without feeling rigid or impersonal. Balancing scientific accuracy, usability, and emotional experience required multiple iterations of visual design and interaction flows.

🎉Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a system that successfully makes an invisible sense perceptible and navigable. Users can now detect, capture, and revisit scents, transforming ordinary environments into rich, layered experiences. The Library and Map interactions allow for meaningful reflection and exploration, while the visual representation of scent signals balances informational clarity with emotional resonance. Beyond the technical achievement, Linger has demonstrated that smell can be a practical and expressive tool for memory, learning, and emotional regulation.

📈What we learned

Through Linger, we learned how design can bridge sensory experience and technology. We discovered the importance of giving users control over interpretation while providing enough structure to make an invisible sense intelligible. We also learned that focusing on overlooked sensory channels opens opportunities for new ways of understanding and interacting with the world. Emotional context, user intuition, and sensory subtlety are as important as data fidelity when designing for human experience.

➡️What's next for Linger

The next step is to expand Linger’s olfactory capabilities and its integration with daily life. This includes improving scent detection accuracy, exploring multisensory interactions, and adding social features that allow users to share scent experiences. We also hope to study the effects of scent-based memory and emotional regulation over longer periods, creating opportunities for learning, wellbeing, and creativity. Ultimately, Linger aims to reconnect people with a sense they often take for granted, making smell a meaningful and actionable part of everyday life.
