Inspiration
Maritime operations continue to rely on human-centric, manual processes—paper checklists, fragmented systems, and institutional knowledge locked in individuals. We were inspired to explore how AI could augment officers’ decision-making, streamline operations, and make regulatory knowledge instantly accessible in high-stakes maritime environments.
What it does
s-Ai-lor is an AI-powered maritime operations assistant that centralizes voyage planning, operational workflows, and regulatory intelligence. It enables officers to manage plans, retrieve internal SOPs and international regulations through an AI assistant, and receive contextual guidance—reducing operational friction, errors, and cognitive load.
How we built it
We built s-Ai-lor using a cloud-native, modular architecture with large language models at its core. The system combines structured operational data with unstructured documents (SOPs, manuals, and maritime regulations) using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). We explored Atlassian Forge to align the solution with enterprise workflows, while deploying the live demo on Vercel to ensure accessibility and usability.
Challenges we ran into
-Building on Atlassian Forge with no prior experience and a strict 3-day timeline -Understanding Forge’s platform constraints and deployment model, which limited our ability to fully host the project -Submitting a partial Forge developer project page, while relying on a Vercel-hosted link to best demonstrate the working product
Accomplishments that we're proud of -Delivering a functional AI assistant purpose-built for maritime operations within a short timeframe -Successfully implementing RAG for fast, accurate retrieval of regulations and internal SOPs -Laying a scalable foundation that can integrate with enterprise platforms like Atlassian in the future
What we learned
-Platform constraints significantly shape product design and delivery -Domain-specific context and explainability are critical for AI adoption in safety-critical industries -Rapid iteration and clear prioritization are essential when building under tight time limits
What's next for s-Ai-lor
-A mobile companion app for officers to access plans and AI assistance on the go -Deeper integration with Atlassian products to embed s-Ai-lor into existing operational workflows -Expanding intelligence capabilities toward predictive insights and proactive risk detection
