Inspiration We were inspired by how recommendation algorithms often keep showing us more of what we already watch. Someone interested in chess might see endless chess videos while missing out on carrom, cricket, astronomy, or music production. We asked ourselves: What if technology helped us discover what we didn't know we would love? That's how Rythmix was born—with a mission to use technology for joy, curiosity, and exploration.

What it does Rythmix is a free Chrome extension that complements YouTube's recommendations with fresh discoveries beyond users' usual interests. It introduces familiar-but-different topics, related interests, new categories, and unexpected discoveries. With a simple on/off switch and no complicated setup, users can explore new videos and interests without leaving their usual browsing experience.

How we built it We built Rythmix as a Chrome extension using Manifest V3, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and browser extension APIs. A local recommendation engine analyzes available content signals and uses interest categories, novelty, diversity, and feedback to suggest discoveries. We designed a unified recommendation experience that combines familiar interests with new and surprising possibilities. Our goal was to keep the core experience free, lightweight, and functional without requiring a paid AI service.

Challenges we ran into Our biggest challenge was turning the idea of breaking recommendation bubbles into a practical browser extension. We had to work around YouTube's dynamic interface, make discovery cards integrate smoothly without disrupting normal browsing, and ensure the recommendations were genuinely different rather than simply repeating familiar content. We also worked to simplify the user experience, eliminate unnecessary settings, and make the extension work reliably with a single toggle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud of building a product around a different philosophy of personalization: discovery instead of repetition. Rythmix brings together a unified discovery experience, a simple activation flow, and a recommendation approach designed to introduce users to unfamiliar interests. We're especially proud of our focus on accessibility, a free core experience, and making exploration feel effortless.

What we learned We learned that building a recommendation system isn't just about finding relevant content. It's also about balancing familiarity with novelty, respecting user preferences, and making unexpected recommendations feel meaningful. We also learned that integrating with an existing platform requires careful handling of dynamic interfaces, permissions, and technical limitations. Most importantly, we learned that good technology should expand people's possibilities, not simply reinforce their existing habits.

What's next for Rythmix Our next steps are to improve recommendation quality, strengthen YouTube integration, and make discoveries more diverse and personally relevant. We want to help users explore new interests through better feedback, smarter connections between topics, and a growing discovery catalog. In the future, we hope to expand beyond YouTube to other content platforms while maintaining a privacy-conscious, accessible, and free experience.

Our vision is simple: Rythmix shouldn't decide what you love. It should help you discover it.
