Context & Use Cases
I built RxPlain at the NovaForge AI Venture Lab Build for People Hackathon, sponsored by Lovable. The idea came from a straightforward frustration: pharmacy handouts are dense, jargon-heavy, and rarely in the patient's first language. Newcomers, seniors, and people with limited English proficiency are the ones who suffer from it. I grew up translating prescription labels and side effect sheets for my father, and that started when I was eight years old. RxPlain came from that.
Why RxPlain over a simple Google search?
A Google search for a medication name will get you a Wikipedia summary or a drug database entry written for clinicians. It will not tell you to avoid that medication if you are pregnant. It will not tell you what happens if you are already taking something else. You would have to know how to search for those things separately, know which sources to trust, and understand the language those sources use. Most people do not have all three.
RxPlain pulls directly from Health Canada's Drug Consumer Information database and organizes everything into one plain-language page: what the medication is for, how to take it, warnings specific to your situation, side effects, and when to contact a doctor.
Medical terms are replaced with everyday language so the information is actually usable, not just technically available. We also built a multi-drug interaction checker so users can enter two or more medications and see whether Health Canada's data flags any documented concerns between them, displayed in plain language with the source cited. If no interaction is documented, we say that clearly without implying it is safe, and direct the user to confirm with a pharmacist.
RxPlain does NOT provide medical advice, nor does it diagnose anything; it simply provides reliable information on whatever medication you want to look up. Similarly, it does not store any user data.
