rxInfo: A suite of SMArt Applications rxInfo is a suite of SMArt (Substitutable Medical Apps, Reusable Technologies ) applications designed to execute within SMArt containers.  A SMArt Container is, most often, an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system used by physicians, but might also be a Personal Health Record (PHR) used by patients or a data-analytics platform used by researchers. Each module of the rxInfo suite is a stand alone SMArt app and operates independently of the other modules.  Each module can be installed by itself or with other rxInfo modules.  The modular construction of the suite makes it easier for SMArt container publishers to manage and control the functionality that is provided to their user communities. rxInfo is composed of the following modules: rxClinicalTrials, rxDrugInteractions, rxFDALabels and rxHealthCenters.  Click the name of each module for a short video demonstration of its features.  Or, you can click  rxInfo screencast playlist for a playlist of all rxInfo screencasts: rxClinicalTrials rxClinicalTrials provides a means for locating federally and privately supported clinical trials based on information from ClinicalTrials.gov.  A clinical trial (also clinical research) is a research study in human volunteers to answer specific health questions. Upon start up, rxClinicalTrials retrieves the patient’s demographic information and problems from the SMArt EMR container.  When the user selects a problem, titles of all clinical trials that are (keyword) related and are currently recruiting are listed and linked to more detailed information stored at ClinicalTrials.gov. rxClinicalTrials also provides a keyword and trial status search capability.  The title of all trials matching the search criteria will be listed and linked to more detailed information stored at ClinicalTrials.gov. rxDrugInteractions rxDrugInteractions provides drug interaction information based on information contained in the Veterans Health Administration National Drug File – Reference Terminology (NDF-RTTM) database. Upon start up, rxDrugInteractions retrieves the patient’s demographic information and medications from the SMArt EMR container.  It also interacts with RxNorm and NDF-RTTM to determine the ingredients of each medication.  When the user selects a medication, drugs found to interact with the medication or any of its ingredients are listed along with the severity of the interaction.  If the interacting drug is in the patient’s list of medications, an asterisk (*) will be placed beside the name of the interacting drug and the position in the list of medications of the drug(s) with which it interacts will be noted.  In addition, the interacting drugs will be linked to more information available through the National Cancer Institute’s NCI Term Browser rxDrugInteractions allows the user to enter the name of a drug and then to search the NDF-RTTM database for known drug interactions.  rxDrugInteractions is tolerant of misspellings; suggesting a list of drugs with alternative spellings that the user can pick from when the name of the drug cannot be found in the RxNorm database.  Also, rxDrugInteractions is tolerant of ambiguities when RxNorm reports that the drug can exist in several forms; suggesting a list of drugs that the user can pick from when there is ambiguity as to which form was intended. rxFDALabels rxFDALabels provides FDA Label information (i.e. package inserts) about marketed drugs based on information from the National Library of Medicine’s DailyMed database.  The information provided is what has been most recently submitted by drug companies in Structured Product Label (SPL) format to the Food and Drug Administration as drug listing information. Upon start up, rxFDALabels retrieves the patient’s demographic information and medications from the SMArt EMR container.  When the user selects a medication, RxNorm is queried to determine which labels have been associated with the medication.  Summary information about the most recent version of the label from each responsible organization will be provided and linked to its SPL. rxFDALabels also provides a keyword search capability of the FDA Labels database.  Summary information about all labels matching the search criteria will be listed and linked to their SPLs. rxHealthCenters rxHealthCenters provides a listing of nearby federally funded health centers based on information from the HRSA Geospatial Data Warehouse.  Federally funded health centers receive a significant portion of their funding from the federal government and bases its fees on the patient’s ability to pay. Upon start up, rxHealthCenters retrieves the patient’s demographic information from the SMArt EMR container.  The patient’s zip code is then used to query the HRSA Geospatial Data Warehouse for nearby federally funded health centers.  Nearby health centers are listed in order of increasing (line of sight) distance from the patient’s zip code.  In addition, a map showing the location of the closest 5 health centers relative to the patient's zip code will be displayed. rxHealthCenters also allows the user to enter any zip code and then to search the HRSA Geospatial Data Warehouse for nearby health centers.  rxInfo Data Sources
